Two teenage boys accused of murder were remanded when they appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Allegations are that on June 2, the two co-accused, ages 16 and 17, were believed to have been in a fight with the now deceased, 18-year-old David Wilson, following a brief dispute. During the tussle, the minors were accused of holding on to Wilson and strangling him to death. It was further alleged that a machete was used to chop the deceased. Wilson's body was reportedly left on a sidewalk.
During much of the proceedings, there was disquiet regarding the true age of the 17-year-old, as conflicting reports suggested he may actually be 18 years old. Troubled by the discrepancy, Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey insisted that the investigating officer make every effort to make his birth certificate available to the court.
"I want the birth certificate ... this is not the sort of thing you can make a mistake on," said RM Pusey.
Subsequently, both minors were ordered remanded to a place of safety by the sitting magistrate, until July 4 for a mention hearing.
