Rural town resident steals rum for World Cup

A shoplifter was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after he was held for stealing rum from a supermarket.

Charged with simple larceny is 21-year-old Corey Brown.

He pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court heard that on the day in question, Brown went to a supermarket and stole a one litre bottle of Appleton Special Jamaica rum.

Allegations are that security personnel saw him put the rum in a bag and placed it over his shoulder and walked out without paying for the rum.

He was held and the police were summoned.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said, "Why are you stealing rum?"

Brown said, "It was a slight misunderstanding, Your Honour."

"I know you wanted to put yourself in the right spirit to watch Argentina versus Germany," RM Pusey said.

Brown was fined $15,000 or six months' imprisonment.

His fingerprints were also requested.
