Bus driver on sexual assault charge walks free

A bus driver who said the accusations that he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl were motivated by malice was freed by a jury this week of three counts of carnal abuse.

Marlon Mellis, 36, a former policeman, was tried in the Clarendon Circuit Court.

The complainant said she was in a relationship with Mellis. She said on three occasions in April 2013, Mellis had sexual intercourse with her.

Cross-examined by attorney-at-law Dwight Reece, the complainant admitted that in 2013 she had a dispute with Mellis on his bus.

Mellis, in his defence, denied the allegations. He said he had never been intimate with the complainant. He told the seven-member jury that the charges brought against him were motivated by malice based on a dispute he had with the complainant who was travelling on his bus.

He said the complainant was involved in a relationship with another bus driver. He said when her parents found out, she tried to protect her lover and brought false charges against him.

The jury retired for 10 minutes and freed Mellis.
