Ninety-seven murders since start of January


Jamaica has been rocked with 97 reported murders in the month of January, a 31 per cent increase since the start of the new year.


Information contained in the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Periodic Serious and Violent Crimes Review for January shows a rise in murders when compared to the 74 during the corresponding period in 2014.


This reflects an average of more than three murders per day since the start of the year.


Interestingly, the upsurge in murders at the start of 2015 followed a 16 per cent reduction in murders during 2014.


The data examined also shows reduction in other serious crimes.


When compared to January 2014, there has been a 16 per cent drop in shootings and a 35 per cent decline in rapes.


THE STAR also gathered that 67 illegal guns have been seized since the start of the year.
