The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) is urging the education ministry to be cautious in how it closes schools deemed underpopulated.
JTA's president-elect, Norman Allen, said the teachers' union is concerned about the closures.
According to him, the teachers' group will vigorously scrutinise the process.
The education ministry has said the move to close some schools is aimed at improving the efficiency in the public school system.
Meanwhile, the JTA is warning that it will not succumb to any pressure this year to soften its stance that teachers must receive all the benefits and rights agreed on in negotiations with the Government.
Already, the union has said it will not be party to another public sector wage freeze.
Allen says the JTA will not allow the gains made so far to be diminished.
