It was a scandalous outcome to a funeral in St Catherine on Sunday, after a woman's body was barred from a final resting place at Dovecot Memorial Gardens.
Angry family members, who said they paid more than $250,000 for a funeral package, were shocked when operators at Dovecot told them they had not received any payment to permit the interment of the dead woman.
The agent of the funeral home, responsible for the final payment, was on location, and had to be whisked away by the police after she was nearly beaten by angry funeral supporters.
embarrassing
"It was a friend who told me about this funeral home, and I paid $250,000 to the woman, so it's embarrassing to know that our loved one have to go through something like this," a relative said.
The driver of the hearse distanced himself from the incident, and said that his vehicle was rented to take the body from the church to the burial spot.
Meanwhile, the woman's body remained for hours outside the cemetery as family members were reminded that not until a final payment of $83,000 was paid, the body wouldn't be laid to rest.
Since the incident, Perry's Funeral Arrangements in Spanish Town has taken up the job to complete the burial of the woman.
"This should be a warning to the general public to be aware, because these things normally happen when persons are looking for cheaper rates," Peter Perry of Perry's Funeral Arrangements said.
The St Catherine North police are investigating, however, up to news time, it is unclear if charges were laid against the female funeral agent.
