The St Thomas police anti-praedial larceny and environment enforcement team, established at the start of May, has so far arrested and charged 54 persons for breaches of agricultural and predial larceny acts.
Police said many of those held had fraudulent agricultural receipts that were tampered with to change the date, quantity and nature of agricultural produce. Others had tampered with the receipts by changing the names in which the original receipts were made out, or for possession of agricultural produce without a receipt.
All are booked to face the Morant Bay RM and Yallahs RM courts on June 25 and 26 respectively.
Most of the suspected stolen agricultural produce include bananas, plantains and coconuts. The persons held are mainly from Portland, Wheelerfield, Johnson Mountain and Danvers Pen.
The police special unit was initiated by St Thomas' top cop, Superintendent Merrick Watson, after concerns from farmers.
