'Popcaan' to stand trial for alleged assault on cop

Popular dancehall entertainer André Sutherland more widely known as 'Popcaan' will stand trail on June 5 for allegedly assaulting a policeman last year.

Yesterday when the matter was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, the prosecution attempted to serve the defence with disclosure of the allegations against the artiste.

However, Resident Magistrate Opal Smith halted the process and advised the prosecution to wait until the medical certificate was ready and available, before handing over both at once to the defence.

Allegations are that the entertainer assaulted a policeman while at the Norman Manley International Airport on Monday, November 25, 2013.

Sutherland is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and has since maintained his not-guilty stance.

Both the entertainer and the assaulted officer were present in court yesterday.

Sutherland's bail was extended until his trial date.
