The use of vigilante justice on an alleged thief in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew, recently, has triggered mixed reactions following the circulation of an image online of a man being beaten by a mob.
The incident allegedly took place in the bus park adjacent the Mandela Park last week.
In the image, the alleged thief could be seen being chased by a group of men as he attempted to make his escape over a railing. His efforts were thwarted, however, as the men held on to his shirt and underwear almost stripping him naked.
A man, who is believed to be a plain clothes police officer, could also be seen wielding a gun as he held on to the man's shirt.
But while some viewers lauded the mob for beating the man, others expressed sympathy.
"Him get weh him deserve. Him could a kill who eva him did a try rob. Dem fi dead. Dem nuh value people life weh dem a rob, so why people fi value fi dem own?" an irate viewer stated on Facebook.
Another viewer posted: "Them fi deal with them hard. Nuff hard- working people them lick dung, beat up or kill fi them tings, weh dem work hard fah."
Other viewers expressed differing sentiments, "Why be so hostile? Why wish death on another human being? That's someone's brother, someone's son, someone's dad! You just never know."
Another commented: "People hungry out there because of being robbed by the system. They doing what they need to survive, what opportunities was he denied? Don't judge cause one day you might need to steal just to feed your babies."
