Following the recent culling of some 20,000 chickens in Hong Kong, China, due to them contracting a strain of the bird flu virus known as H7N9, Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke has sought to allay fears of local poultry contracting the virus.
Clarke told THE STAR, "Right now, it's no cause for concern. We don't import chicken from Hong Kong and we always have surveillance up when it comes to the importation of chicken."
The H7N9 virus, according to the World Health Organisation, can be transferred to humans once they have had exposure to live infected poultry or potentially contaminated environments.
Clarke stated, however, that precautionary measures are put in place to monitor persons who are coming from affected areas.
