A motorist who pleaded guilty to attempting to bribe a policeman during a spot check was fined $100,000 or six months' imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
He is Yraerc Creary, a 36-year-old labourer, of Vineyard Town, Kingston.
When Creary appeared before Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey, his lawyer, Charles Williams, pleaded for leniency. The lawyer told the court that Creary was very remorseful about his action.
He begged the RM not to send him to prison.
The court heard that on January 9, about 11:30 a.m., police stopped Creary along Washington Boulevard, St Andrew, and issued him a ticket for speeding. Creary then pulled out $1,000 and told a policeman, "tek dis, is all mi have.''
He was detained and later charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act by Detective Corporal Kirk Roache.
