Wah gwaan, Jamaica! Dis time a year again, we deh yah fe celebrate our Independence, di one-drop rhythm a beat loud inna every heart from Mobay straight to Portie. Sixty-sum odd years we independent now, and every August 6th, we gi thanks and raise di black, green, and gold high. Di likkle pickney dem a school a learn 'bout our heroes, like Nanny and Garvey, and di elders a reminisce 'bout di long journey we tek fi get where we are now, a free nation.
But dis year, a likkle different, enuh. Fi di first time since Hurricane Melissa buss like a mad bull pon di island, we a mark di day. Melissa did try fi mash up things, she did try fi tek we spirit. Di wind dem roar like a hungry duppy, houses did lose roof, big old trees did fall like domino, and some a we did feel like di world a come to an end. Di rain fall like judgment, and di flood did cause whole heap a disruption. It did rough, yes, pure tribulation, but guess what? We still deh yah, standing firm.
Dem seh 'out of many, one people,' and dat a nuh just a slogan pon a sign; dat a di truth we live by, pure fact. When di storm done pass, we nuh sit down and bawl, nah sah. We tek up machete, we tek up hammer, and we start fi rebuild with our own two hands. Neighbour help neighbour, family help family, without even asking. Di likkle shopkeeper still manage fi open him stall, di farmer still plant him crop, even if di ground did tek a lick, and di fisherman still tek him boat go sea, searching for him livelihood. Dat's di Jamaican spirit, boss – tough like lignum vitae wood, flexible like bamboo inna di breeze.
So as di sun shine bright pon we beloved flag today, with its X-shape representing di hardship we face and di hope we find, we nuh just a remember di hardship, we a celebrate di strength we find inna di struggle. We a celebrate di laughter we still manage fi find inna di face a adversity, di music we still play loud and proud, and di good food we still share 'round di table. Jamaica is more than just a place; it's a vibe, a force, a resilience dat no storm, no challenge, no hardship cyaan' ever conquer. We stand tall, we give thanks to di Most High, and we look forward with a heart full a hope and pride fi a brighter tomorrow. One love, one aim, one destiny, every time, forever and ever!
