Twelve-month sentence for smuggling ganja

A woman who was nabbed at the Norman Manley International Airport while attempting to smuggle ganja out of the island, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment when she appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court recently.

She is Shanalee Francis, who pleaded guilty to charges of possession of, dealing in, conspiracy to export, and taking steps to export ganja.

The court heard that on the day in question, Francis, before boarding an outbound flight, was accosted and searched by airport officials. She was found to have a quantity of ganja stashed away inside her luggage.

In court, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered Francis to pay a fine of $1,800 or serve six months for possession; $3,600 or serve six months for dealing; $7,200 or serve six months for taking steps to export ganja and ordered to serve 12 months in prison.

The sentences will run concurrently, which means Francis will spend a total of 12 months in prison.
