A man who collected $72,000 from a woman whom he told he was a policeman with connection to the Canadian Work Programme, pleaded guilty in the Old Harbour Resident Magistrate's Court recently.

He is Ricardo Philips, a 32-year-old unemployed of Old Harbour, St Catherine.

When the matter came up before Resident Magistrate Horace Mitchell, Philips pleaded guilty.

He was remanded until April 24, 2015, when he will be sentenced.

The court heard that Philips met the complainant in December 2014. He told her he was a policeman.

He added that his mother is an employee of the Ministry of Labour with responsibility for the Canadian Farm Work Programme.

He told her that he could get her to travel on it. He then collected a total of $72,000 from her.

After unsuccessful attempts to get in touch with the accused a report was made to the Old Harbour police. Following an investigation Philips was charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence and impersonating a police officer.
