Dutch national fined for overstaying time

A Dutch national who overstayed her time in Jamaica was fined $9,500 or 10 days' imprisonment and ordered deported when she appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.


She is Dieywkje Welinke, 45, of The Netherlands.


When the matter came up before Resident Magistrate Llyle Armstrong, she pleaded guilty.


The accused told the court that she did not have any money to pay the court. A deportation order was also granted in the matter.


The accused was held on March 3, after she stole items at the Shoppers Fair Supermarket in Spanish Town.


During the initial investigation, it was revealed that she was a Dutch national.


It was also revealed that she arrived in Jamaica on April 13, 2014 for a 90-day vacation. She should have departed the island on July 29, but instead overstayed her time.


Investigation by Sergeant Wilford Stewart resulted in her being charged.
