WESTERN BUREAU:

A St Mary man who was arrested after he reportedly defrauded two tourists whom he had offered services as a tour guide in Montego Bay was remanded until February 12, when his case will be mentioned.

Gladstone Thompson, of a Gayle address in St Mary, is charged with larceny by trick, simple larceny, and two counts of operating without a Jamaica Tourist Board licence.

It is alleged that on June 14, 2014, Thompson made arrangements with the first complainant to take him on a tour to Black River, St Elizabeth, after having previously taken him on tours to Montego Bay. Thompson took US$440 (J$51,040) from the complainant for that venture, but did not deliver on his part of the arrangement.

It is also alleged that on January 12, this year, Thompson offered his services as a tour guide to another tourist in Montego Bay, who subsequently left his bags with the accused while going on a mountain tour. When the complainant returned, $3,000 was subsequently found to be missing from one of his bags.

When Thompson appeared in court, it was revealed that he had not taken up his bail, which had been offered to him during his last court appearance.

The court was also told that one of the complainants was overseas, and would have to be brought back to Jamaica in order to give evidence against Thompson.

Resident Magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines subsequently set the case for mention on February 12, and remanded Thompson until that date.
