A special constable who was accused of collecting money from a Canadian visitor two years ago had his case dismissed in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Altimont Aire who was at the Linstead Police Station in St Catherine. was freed when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Anmarie Nembhard. He was freed after RM dismissed the case for want of prosecution.

It was revealed that the complainant in the matter was constantly absent from court.

Allegations are that in 2012 the accused and a senior personnel were in the Linstead police area. They reportedly signalled a motorist to stop and he obeyed. When his documents were checked there were discrepancies on them. Money was solicited from the motorist for the police not to prosecute him.

It is reported that money was given to the police.

The complainant then reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Branch.

An investigation was launched which resulted in the arrest and charge of the special constable with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.
