21-year-old sentenced to 18 months in prison

Eighteen months in prison is how 21-year-old Rushawn Whyte will spend his time after he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob. He was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Whyte, unemployed, of Fletcher's Land, Kingston, was sentenced by Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.

Allegations are that on April 30, a woman was walking along 46 Church Street, Kingston, when Whyte grabbed her hand in a bid to take away her cell phone.

It is reported that a struggle ensued and the complainant made an outcry for help.

The court heard that Whyte was chased and handed over to the cops.

Before the accused was sentenced, Whyte was asked if he had any previous convictions, and he told the RM that he could only recall a ganja matter.

However, background checks made on the accused revealed that he had several convictions.
