Female defender fined $30,000

A man who told the court he was defending his female colleague against an alleged pervert was fined $30,000 or 10 days in prison when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Pleading guilty to unlawful wounding is Lij Sinclair of a Kingston address.

According to reports, Sinclair and the complainant were engaged in an argument that escalated into a fight when he allegedly used a knife to stab the complainant in the head.

Sinclair, who admitted to stabbing the complainant, told the court that the complainant was harassing his female companion and he was simply defending her.

"I was going about my business with a female companion. This man that I do not know from anywhere, he was touching her on her bottom. When we came out of the wholesale, he was still doing it and she was afraid," he said.

During Sinclair's explanation, the complainant exclaimed, 'What!' to which he added, "Your Honour, him stab me in three places, inna me head, neck and hand."

Presiding judge Resident Magistrate Opal Smith berated the accused stating, "You have to find other ways to assert your maleness, you can't be pulling your knife on people. What if he had died?"

Sinclair was fined $30,000 or ordered to spend 10 days in prison.
