Man fined for assaulting policewoman

A man accused of assaulting a policewoman at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre, St Andrew, was fined in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

He is Dwayne James, who pleaded 'not guilty with explanation' to the assault occasioning bodily harm charge.

It is alleged that on the day in question, there was a fracas between James and another man at the bus park. It is believed that in attempts to restore order, the policewoman took hold of James.

A short while later, it is alleged that James hauled the policewoman, who still had a firm grasp on him, over to a nearby Coaster bus which he entered. Subsequently, it is believed that the door of the bus closed on the policewoman's fingers.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered a fine of $15,000 for James or six months in prison. A fingerprint order was also made.
