Laughter erupted in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday after the charges were read for a man who was accused of stealing.
Answering to a simple larceny charge is Humphrey Keathing of a Kingston address.
It is alleged that Keathing stole a bottle of Vaseline and mixed nuts from a supermarket recently.
Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked the accused what he did for a living, to which he responded, "handy man," which sparked laughter in the court.
Keithing told the court, "It was a mistake on my part." Pusey responded, "what you did was absolutely unnecessary, especially for a working man!"
He was fined $10,000 or six months in prison.
