The mother of a 16-year-old teenager is left to mourn the death of her son after he was shot and killed yesterday afternoon by four armed men in what police theorised was a reprisal shooting.
The dead teen has been identified as Jamieke Smith, otherwise known as 'Guess' or 'Ankle Socks', a resident of Fletcher's Land and a third-form student of the Tivoli Gardens High School.
The incident is believed to have happened sometime after 1p.m. while Smith was fixing his gate. A 73-year-old man from the same community was also shot and injured during the incident and taken to hospital.
According to police investigators, a gang conflict reportedly took place in the community on Tuesday night and the police intervened. The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, was in response to what had previously transpired on Tuesday.
Police presence
According to Michael Scott, superintendent of police in charge of Kingston Central, information has been collected and the police are looking into leads. Police presence in the community has also been increased.
In the meantime, Smith's mother, Shernett Bryan, described her son as a "militant and nice youth".
Present in the community following the incident was Member of Parliament for Western Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, and principal of Tivoli High School, Aldrick Durrant.
"I am hoping that this will be the first and the last one of its kind in the constituency," said McKenzie who explained that there were a few incidents in the past which had been brought under control with the help of the police.
