Conductor punches, breaks cops nose

A bus conductor who broke a policeman's nose was ordered to pay $20,000 or serve six months imprisonment when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Charged with assaulting police and unlawful wounding is Errol Daughma.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, the policeman, who is a corporal, went to the bus that Daughma was a conductor on and ordered that passengers come out of the bus, but they refused.

"You know you come in like a crosses," Daughma is reported to have said to the corporal.

A heated exchange subsequently developed between the accused and the corporal, and during an altercation, Daughma punched the policeman.

"To how much pain mi feel, mi punch him and run leff him," the accused told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey. The punch reportedly broke the policeman's nose.

The Senior RM then told Daughma, "you can look on the officer and call him crosses? When you fly up in his face, what do you want me, Judith Pusey, to do?"

She then ordered him to pay the fine or serve the six months.
