A resident of the Kingston Gardens community is blasting members of the fire brigade for what they claim was tardy response to fire that gutted a four-bedroom dwelling on Mid Avenue in the community yesterday afternoon.
It took four units from the York Park, Rollington Town and Trench Town Fire Stations to extinguish the fire which is believed to have started in the kitchen of the house.
"The police unit come early. I have to call my MP, Ronny Thwaites, to call them for them to come, and the councillor. Them service poor. If they came earlier, them save the people's things because is round the back the fire started, and when them come, the fire in blaze already. We could only take out the old woman out of the house," the angry resident stated.
keep my nerves
The elderly woman, who was inside the house at the time of the blaze, expressed her thanks to the man who was able to rescue her.
"Same time a young man came and took me out and carried me over here," she said. "I kept my nerves calm because I have the chicken sickness (chikungunya), and I just feeling better, but I tried to keep my nerves calm because whilst there is hope, there is life," she continued.
In the meantime, Assistant Superintendent of the York Park Fire Station, Dennis Lyons, said his team responded on time, and that there was no truth to claims made by the resident that the fire brigade was tardy.
"We dispatched two units from the York Park Fire Station, which is in close proximity, and the other from Rollington Town Fire Station. The brigades quickly got into operation, and after working for a few minutes, we were able to bring the fire under control," Lyons said.
He said that just a minute after the call was made at 2:35p.m., the York Park unit responded. He also said that there were no issues with water.
It is unclear what was the estimate of the damage to the property.
