'TEACHER BROKE MY DAUGHTER'S TOOTH'

Mom cries foul after child is suspended

Andre' Williams, STAR Writer

An irate mother whose daughter was allegedly physically assaulted by a male teacher, which resulted in her breaking a tooth, is hopping mad after her daughter was suspended from the St Thomas-based institution following the incident.

Information reaching THE STAR is that on Monday, January 26, the fourth-form student and her physical education teacher exchanged blows after a dispute between them which took place on a field and in full view of others.

The mother of the child contacted THE STAR from overseas and told our news team what she understood took place.

She said, "My daughter was assaulted by her PE teacher at school ... I would like to know if that is what teachers are for?"

Unanswered

She continued, "My daughter wasn't feeling well at PE and when she attempted to leave she was pushed to the ground and hit her tooth which broke. She did say she pushed back the teacher, she was in pain and had to be taken to a doctor."

Numerous attempts by our news team to speak with the school proved futile as several calls went unanswered.

Yesterday, when THE STAR contacted the mother, she was still upset about the incident and how it was being handled.

She told our news team, "Yesterday (Monday), she and her dad went to the school for a meeting and I am not satisfied even though she was accepted back into school today."

The principal

THE STAR was told that the principal and the teacher at the centre of the altercation were not present at the meeting.

"What is the purpose of that meeting ... to see if she has a parent? The PE teacher was not there and the principal spoke to her father over the telephone while he was at the school", said the fuming mother.

THE STAR gathered that the child was only allowed back to school, on the basis that the teacher had hit her back during the melee, otherwise she would have been suspended further.

According to the teen's mother, it appears that is now ok for children to be abused by teachers in Jamaica.

Our news team was also told that the male teacher has reportedly been implicated in other matters of student abuse.

The latest incident was not reported to the police.
